CROSS- CULTURAL DATING
Culture has been defined as an integrated systems of belief, values ( about what is true, good, beautiful and normative of customs (how to behave, relate to others, talk, pray, dress, work, play, trade, farm, eat etc. All these things came to us as heritage in the family and society where we belong. They are basic or (one) foundational normative laid down for us to inherit. And no one can say that he or she does not belong to a family or society. We all have one.
My topic or title as you have read is “Cross-cultural dating”. This is a dating between people of different cultures or worldviews. You can equally call it cross- cultural relationship or Cross-cultural courtship. Any of these can lead to cross-cultural marriage eventually.
Nowadays the internet and computer have made the world we live in more of a global village. Person or persons from one end of the world can interact online with other persons in the other end of the world. With this development people can do a lot of activities including business, study, training, social interactions etc. through the web.
Social relationships such as dating, courtship, marriages and networking are done online. Without doubt or argument, we will agree that more than seventy per cent of dating and marriages are on the level of inter-racial relations. All these inter-racial or cultural interactions do encounter cross-cultural communication problems, one time or the other. It we may ask what cross-cultural communication or interaction really is? It is communication or interaction between people of different cultures or world views. Lack of its knowledge and understanding has posed a big problem among suitors and their dates that are of different cultures. One of the problems, which has been so evident among lovers is what is known as “Culture shock”. There have been situations where people who are in courtship see certain behaviors in their partners as being unusual or oddity. As a result we get irritated and amazed. Most times we seek withdrawal, and call it quits.
But what we regard, as abnormal in the other person, is a normal way of life in his or her own society. What should one do to overcome culture shock in dating? We have to re- adjust and adapt to what is new. We ought to accept and respect. Keep in touch with us, because more are yet unravel, in this regard.
